Adjective conjugation review

Adjective conjugation review

There are two types of adjectives in Japanese: i-adjectives and na-adjectives. The type of adjective is determined by its ending and how you conjugate them changes on which group the adjective belongs to.

 ใ„ adjectives

All i-adjectives end in ใ„, for example, ใŸใฎใ—ใ„ (tanoshii):

PositiveNegative
Non-pastใŸใฎใ—ใ„ใงใ™
ใŸใฎใ—ใใชใ„ใงใ™
PastใŸใฎใ—ใ‹ใฃใŸใงใ™
 ใŸใฎใ—ใใชใ‹ใฃใŸใงใ™

There is one exception in this group: ใ„ใ„ใงใ™. This conjugates by changing the ใ„ใ„ to ใ‚ˆ

PositiveNegative
Non-pastใ„ใ„ใงใ™
ใ‚ˆใใชใ„ใงใ™
Pastใ‚ˆใ‹ใฃใŸใงใ™
ใ‚ˆใใชใ‹ใฃใŸใงใ™

The ใฆform for ใ„ใ„ใงใ™ also follows the ใ„ใ„ to ใ‚ˆ pattern: ใ‚ˆใใฆ

ใช adjectives

Na-adjectives, for example, ใ—ใšใ‹:

PositiveNegative
Non-pastใ—ใšใ‹ใงใ™
ใ—ใšใ‹ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“
Pastใ—ใšใ‹ใงใ—ใŸ
ใ—ใšใ‹ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ใงใ—ใŸ

Often people confuse na-adjectives that end with an ใ„ as an i-adjective but they are actually na-adjectives, for example ใใ‚‰ใ„ (kirai).

Nouns

The conjugation of nominal predicates or nouns used as a predicate, is the same as Na-Adjectives. For example, the noun ใŒใใ›ใ„ conjugation is:

PositiveNegative
Non-pastใŒใใ›ใ„ใงใ™
ใŒใใ›ใ„ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“
PastใŒใใ›ใ„ใงใ—ใŸ
ใŒใใ›ใ„ใ˜ใ‚ƒใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ›ใ‚“ใงใ—ใŸ
